Education in Uganda

The education system in Uganda is structured around 7 years of primary education, 6 years of secondary education (divided into 4 years of lower secondary and 2 years of upper secondary school), and 3-5 years of post-secondary education. The system has been in place since the 1960s.

Education in Uganda is administered in English. All throughout the levels in the education structure, modules are taught and assessed in English. The government of Uganda recognizes education as a basic human right and continues to strive to provide free primary education to all children in the country.

The most important university in Uganda is

Makerere University: located in Kampala. It is the largest and oldest higher education institution in Uganda, founded in 19222. Makerere University is often ranked as the best university in Uganda and is recognized for its programs in fields such as law, medicine, economics, and computer science. It has a rich history and has played a significant role in the intellectual and political life of the region.
Second Important University is Kampala International University (KIU): is a private, chartered, recognized, and accredited university in Uganda and outside. It was established by corporate professionals in February 1998 and opened its gates to pioneer students in October 1999. The University was first licensed by the Ministry of Education and Sports on 23rd November 2000 to operate as an institution of higher learning.

Kyambogo University (KYU): A public university in Uganda. It is one of the eight public universities and degree-awarding institutions in the country.
Cavendish University Uganda (CUU): A private university licensed and accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE), and was established in 2008.

To apply for a student visa to study in Uganda, you need to follow these steps:

Valid Student ID Card: You need to have a valid student ID card.
Passport: You need a copy of your passport’s bio-data page with at least 6 months’ validity.
Recent Passport-size Photograph: You need to provide a recent passport-size photograph.
Support Letter from School: You need a support letter from your school.
Admission letter from school: You need an admission letter from your school.
Proof of payment of fees: You need to provide proof of payment of fees.
Current immigration status: If you have a visa or previous pass, you need to provide it.
Parent/Guardian details: If you are below 18 years, you need to provide the immigration status and identification of your parent/guardian.
After gathering all the necessary documents, you can apply for the student visa online through the Immigration portal. The fee for the student visa is USD 100, payable at the point of application. This is a standard fee for any period that has been granted. East African nationals are exempted from this fee.
Please note that the processing time for the application can take from one to seven days, although it may take longer depending on the specific Embassy/Consulate. After your application has been processed, you can pick up your visa during the pick-up hour.
